Ethics Policy: How We Stay Independent

The Shelfline Compendium stays independent by refusing paid listings, sponsored content, and paid placement from audio retailers, installers, or equipment manufacturers. We do not rank products by affiliate commission or advertising spend. Recommendations are earned through direct experience, technical merit, and community trust. This policy is binding across every page of the site and every update to our recommendations. Independence is not aspirational—it is structural. No advertiser account, no revenue from referrals, no affiliate fees that vary by product or vendor. A reader who doubts whether a recommendation is genuine can point to the absence of competing financial interests.

Our independence, in plain terms

100% reader-supported · 0 paid listings · 12+ years of independent reviews · Affiliate links disclosed on every mention · Recommendations withdrawn immediately if issues arise · Conflicts of interest reported within 30 days

Trust Through Transparency

Every recommendation comes with its reasoning. We explain what worked, what didn’t, and under what conditions. If a recommendation changes, we note why and when. This is more work than a simple thumbs-up, but it is the only way to earn skepticism-deserving trust.

Reporting a conflict of interest

If you notice a conflict of interest on this site, or if a recommendation no longer reflects our experience, contact us with specifics. Include the page, the recommendation, and the reason you believe it conflicts with our policy. We respond to concerns within one business day. A single reader report can trigger a re-evaluation of that recommendation. We value your skepticism—it keeps us honest. Your role as a reader is to hold us accountable. We expect it. We invite it. And we act on it when you speak up.

Questions?

Use the contact form to report a conflict of interest or to challenge a recommendation. Include the specific recommendation and the reason you believe it violates our independence policy. We will investigate and respond within one business day.

Footnote: This table describes our internal policy. It does not cover edge cases where a product is recommended by name without a direct retailer link, or where a recommendation includes a caveat (such as “this model has been superseded but is still available secondhand at fair prices”). Those situations are handled case-by-case and documented in the page where they appear.

What Independence Looks Like

A reader should be able to point to any page, any recommendation, and ask “who benefits financially if I follow this?” The answer, consistently, is “nobody but you.” That is the only kind of trust worth having.
